Newport took center stage on a rainy May 5th with The Newport Opera House Theater & Performing Arts Center’s dramatic fundraiser “A Theater Happening in Washington Square.” The Theater’s neighboring businesses joined in the celebration and opened their doors as more than 300 guests strolled along the street and tented venue, taking in mini concerts and other performances at designated stops. While sipping Pimm’s Cups and savoring tantalizing tidbits from artistic food stations along the moveable feast, attendees mingled with guides in historical dress and actors portraying Opera House performers Mary Pickford, Harry Houdini and Virginia Buchanan. For its grand finale, the Theater lit up the stormy night with a spectacular light show farewell.
